Big Canyon Bird and Plant Walk
Take a hike! Head to the Newport Bay Conservancy to find the Big Canyon, located at 21442 Back Bay Drive, for a Saturday morning led hike. From 9 a.m. – 11 p.m., enjoy a short hike in a naturalist area and learn more about the natural habitat of Newport Bay—as well as the flora and fauna it supports. Birders and photographers are especially in for a great treat.
Upper Newport Bay offers unique tours where you’ll spot a variety of wildlife depending on the weather, docent, and season. During warmer months, you’ll spot open-water skimmers and the sterns that migrate to Southern California for nesting. Colder months reveal grebes, ducks, and shorebirds from Canada. March is the perfect month to spot the transition birds.
Back to Nature
Every Saturday offers a one of a kind tour, so don’t miss out. It’s free (though you may pay for parking) and suitable for all ages and most abilities. Dress in layers and bring good walking shoes and binoculars. After, you can explore the trails at your leisure. Ask a local restaurant to pack a picnic brunch for you, and explore one of Southern California’s most beautiful destinations.
When you get back to nature, you can discover new ways to fall in love with the Golden State. What will you discover on your trek?
