The Iditarod has been going on for 47 years and is one of the most famous events in Alaska. The 47th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins on Saturday, March 2, and the race lasts about 10 days. It starts with the Ceremonial Start in downtown Anchorage, just a short drive from Aptel Studio Hotel. As spectators, you can observe the dog mushers from up-close, and you can follow the race if you desire to. The race then has its restart the next day in the small town of Willow and follows the historic Iditarod trail about 1,000 miles across Alaska with mushers crossing the finish line in Nome.

The weeks surrounding the Iditarod are full of fun events for the whole family. If you are visiting Anchorage during the Iditarod dates, try some of these unique events, as well as some dog-friendly things to do.

Anchorage is surrounded by trails and mountains. Visit Conner’s Bog near downtown or Hillside Park. Both have spectacular views for you to enjoy and long trails for dogs to appreciate. These parks have a lot to offer, whether you prefer to simply hike, go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. There are also opportunities for wildlife viewing, so be sure to keep an eye out for Anchorage’s many resident moose while exploring the parks.
