The excitement is overwhelming and more and more people are crowding into New Orleans to enjoy the experience. Here are a few tips to keep you safe while you have fun.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t be late! If you are late, don\u2019t move chairs, ladders, etc. Just because someone is not there does not mean someone isn\u2019t looking out. Many of these family members congregate in the same area each year and know their parade route buddies and neighbors fairly well which means they always have someone looking out for them. Don\u2019t worry, once the parade starts, there is room for everyone.<\/li>\n<li>Respect the Police. They are here for your protection and to keep everything under control. They are over worked during the festival season yet tend to be tolerant of usually unacceptable behavior. Don\u2019t be sassy or obnoxious.<\/li>\n<li>Dress in costume and partake in the festivities. There are contest in various parts of the city and people watching can be as much fun as the parades.<\/li>\n<li>Catch Mardi Gras throws but do NOT bend down to pick up the beads. Your fingers may never be the same. Put your foot on it and between floats, when it is safe, you can pick them up. Kids have to have the throws and don\u2019t think about the next float but they also have no idea how dangerous picking up beads can be.<\/li>\n<li>Have a meeting place. Mardi Gras is a HUGE carnival with thousands of attendees. It is very easy to get separated from your group so make sure everyone knows where to meet if they get lost. Also, instruct your children to go to a police officer if they are lost. With such large crowds, it is hard to rely on cell phones as the towers can be jammed with the overload of usage.<\/li>\n<li>Be careful with your belongings. If you visit the French Quarter at night during the Mardi Gras festival, be sure to watch your wallet. Don\u2019t wear expensive jewelry or carry a purse and make sure you ear shoes that are comfortable and can get dirty. Also, be careful with your smart phone. They are expensive and can become a target of theft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Be a good patron and above all else, have fun and enjoy the atmosphere.
