Kodiak is the second largest island in the U.S.<\/h2>\n

People often don’t realize just how big Kodiak Island is.\u00a0 At 3595 square miles, it’s the largest island in Alaska, the second largest in the United States (Hawaii’s Big Island is the largest by roughly 500 square miles),\u00a0and the 80th largest in the world (out of around 2000 islands in the world).\u00a0 That means it’s bigger than Puerto Rico and Cyprus, and almost as big as Jamaica!<\/p>\n

Kodiak Bears<\/a> are some of the largest on the planet.<\/h2>\n

They’re bigger than grizzlies, and almost as big as polar bears at about 8 feet tall.\u00a0 They are also\u00a0exclusively\u00a0found in Kodiak, as a subspecies of brown bear.<\/p>\n

The Alutiiq are native to Kodiak Island and have lived there for thousands of years.<\/h2>\n

Roughly 7000 years, actually.\u00a0 The local high school teaches the Alutiiq language, and was nearly a dead language until the curriculum added the course.<\/p>\n

Kodiak is home to the largest Coast Guard base in the country.<\/h2>\n

Fort Abercrombie was built in 1939 as a Naval base during World War II.\u00a0 It never saw any action and was abandoned after the war.\u00a0 In 1972, part was turned over to the Coast Guard\u00a0and the rest is now a protected historical park.<\/p>\n

Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge was created by Franklin Roosevelt.<\/h2>\n

It was created in 1941 to protect the Kodiak bears, and now is home to over 3000 bears.<\/p>\n
